Tips to save energy in your home
Because not all energy saving efforts are as easy to see as the recycling bin next to your trash can, here are 9 quick and simple tips to put into practice in your home and help you protect the planet. (and hopefully you save some money along the way too!).
Disconnect and turn off
The best way to save energy is to make sure your appliances and electronics aren't working overtime while you're not using them. Before leaving a room, turn off the lights. If you've finished making a shake, unplug the mixer. Just plug in the printer when you're using it to print something.
Light the way to energy savings
One of the easiest ways to improve energy efficiency in your home is to replace your light bulbs with LEDs. Although LEDs cost more in the store, they last longer than traditional bulbs and use less electricity.
Nature's air conditioning
In summer the weather is warmer, but not so hot that you need air conditioning 24/7. On colder days and at night, try leaving the windows open to cool down your home.
Doing laundry is one of those things that can sometimes ... add up. And we're here to tell you it's okay, in fact, we might even encourage you to! When your clothes pile up, you make the most of the water, detergent, and power in the washing machine by putting in a full load. Full charge cycles instead of multiple smaller charges help reduce water, detergent and energy use.
Drying
When it comes to the dryer, use lower heat settings. Even a longer drying cycle will use less energy and will be less likely to overdry your clothes. Remember to also change loads while the dryer is hot! This allows the remaining heat inside the dryer to be used up in the next cycle! While you're on a roll with these eco-friendly tips, consider air drying to increase your energy reduction.
Get your hands dirty
Give your dishwasher a break and wash your dishes by hand.
Natural hair, I don't care
Drying your hair with a blow dryer can damage it and dry it out. Storing the hair dryer can reduce your electricity consumption and keep your hair healthier at the same time!
Get a hobby
Unplug the TV at night and read a book instead. When the weather is nice, go for a walk or play with your children outside. We promise Netflix won't go away if you take a break and unplug for a bit.
Please wait while you bake
Wait to open the oven until the cookies are done baking. Temperatures can drop quickly and your food will have to stay longer to compensate.
